Bus Stop Angels

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Is your bus stop remarkably clean? No garbage to be seen? Is it shoveled out in the winter? Is there a bench there while other stops don’t have one? If you said yes to any one of these questions, odds are…

You have a bus stop angel.

It isn’t the city doing all this (they are busy doing other things like patching freight train sized potholes on busy roads). It is a concerned resident.

My angel is a businesswoman counting down her days until retirement. She heads out to the bus stop a few minutes early and picks up the garbage. She brings a plastic grocery bag especially for this chore. She then rips down the flyers taped to the bus stop, the driving school lessons, the make money from home scams. She carefully takes all the tape off the glass so the shelter is spotless.

A few minutes of her day (grumbling, she grumbles as she does it), and she has brightened the commute for hundreds, maybe thousands of others.

A couple stops down is one of my favorite bus stops in the city. There was no bench so an angel donated her patio furniture (there is even a little table to set coffee cups on). She (I’m guessing the angel is a she because it is a very feminine stop) then decorates the stop. During the spring and summer, there are cloth flowers brightening it up. Hearts and cupids around Valentine’s Day. Ghosts and goblins and cobwebs during Halloween. Then there is Christmas. Christmas is no holds barred decorating. There are even battery operated lights.

Do her efforts get stolen? Probably. But I’m guessing that the bus stop angel has neighborhood angels by now. I’ve seen people leave boxes of decorations by the stop.

Kindness is contagious.
