The Underground Dwellers

Monday, April 28th, 2008

One of the many special things about living in the city is that you don’t ever have to go outside. Ever. Not if you live in the downtown core.

My city, like many large cities, has an underground with connections to office buildings, malls, subways, condos. This maze of tunnels and pathways run under the streets. Although confusing to the tourist, a knowledgeable downtown worker can spend her entire day inside.

They’re easy to spot, these underground dwellers. They’re the folks on the subway with no coats on in the middle of winter. They’re the ladies with the high, high heels and no travel boots. They’re the women with the perfect, frizz-free hair, despite the rain outside.

Underground dwellers often forget that other people are not as fortunate. Like last week…

I get on the subway after work. It is pouring outside so I’m drenched. Still wearing my winter wool coat, I smell like a wet dog. The wet from my thick hair is running down the back of my neck. Even my eyelashes are dripping.

The car is fairly full but yippee for me, I spot a free seat. It is a two seater. A tiny little blonde with no jacket, perfectly dry hair, and the cutest ivory suit is sitting on the outside. Clearly, an underground dweller.

I say “Excuse me” sweetly. She sniffs in disdain, rolls her eyes and swings her hose covered legs out.

I hesitate. There isn’t much space and I’m very, very wet. But then I shrug and push past.

Total soaker. She splutters. I try to pretend like I wasn’t the one who just did that to her.

Five stops later, I need to switch trains. “Excuse me,” I say again.

This time, she stands up.
